Save Time with Online Banking

By L. Sommer

More and more banks are converting to image processing as this technology improves and becomes more affordable. Along with this come enhancements to your online banking experience. If you already haven’t checked into your bank’s online consumer services, I highly encourage you to do so.

Many banks are now offering FREE online services that allow you to view your accounts. This gives you the means to check your available balance, see if a particular check number or deposit has cleared, and balance your account. You can do this all in the comfort of your home at any time, at your convenience.

Other features of online banking may include online transfers from one account to another, statement viewing and printing, downloading your transaction history into popular software programs such as Quicken and if your bank is image enabled, you can also view and print copies of your checks and deposit tickets! These features are easy to use and require very little computer knowledge.

One of my favorite online banking features is the option to pay bills online. This has been the ultimate time saver for me. I coordinate my bill paying with my paychecks. I know in advance which bills will paid from each check. After I get paid, I go online and schedule all my bills for payment, inputting the dates that my bank should pay them. My bills are never late. I never have to buy stamps. I do this twice per month. I save time and have peace of mind that my financial obligations are taken care of.

Traveling? I have been very fortunate to be able to travel to Europe several times during that past few years. Each time I am gone from two to three weeks. Prior to my trips, I schedule all my bills that will come due while I am gone and I enjoy a worry free trip! This works great with my direct deposit. (This is another bank service that everyone should take advantage of.

At most banks, there are fees associated with online bill payment. However, check to see if your bank offers free bill payment with a qualified account. (Such as keeping a minimum balance) The average cost of online bill payment is $6.20 per month. Your bank may also offer a free trial period so you can take a test drive at no cost or obligation to you. When you consider the cost you save on stamps (just 10 stamps per month is now $3.90!) plus the valuable time you save, in my opinion is well worth the fee for this service.

Visit your bank today, or check it out online. On most occasions, you can even sign up for online banking and bill payment directly from their website.
