57 Ways to Advertise On and Offline

Here are some great tips for advertising your business on and off the internet. Some of these suggestions may require getting permission first. Always do so, or business reputation may be at stake. Don’t be afraid to ask because most of the time the answer will be “yes!”

1. Bumper stickers

2. Flyers

3. Business cards (Self-Made or VistaPrint are cost effective)

4. Personalized T-shirts

5. Message boards

6. Free classifieds

7. E-zines

8. Paid ads on popular WAHM sites

9. Postcards

10. Purchased leads

11. Ask your local library if they would be interested in free bookmarks to hand out to patrons. Make then inexpensively on cardstock paper. Place a nice quote about reading on the front, and place “courtesy of” and your business name & website address on the back!

12. Co-ops

13. Newsgroups

14. Word of mouth (friends and family)

15. Forwarded e-mails (Signature Line!)

16. Inexpensive lapel buttons

17. Pens to hand out

18. When you give someone your business card, always give them FIVE so they can share with family and friends

19. Request 5 minutes at the beginning of different mom groups (MOPS, Breast feeding classes, Lamaze classes, wherever moms may be that are interested in what you offer)

20. Create a tri-fold brochure and attach a mini sample & your business card

21. Welcome baskets of samples & business cards to newcomers in the area

22. Community and Technical Colleges (lots of moms attend!)

23. Put a business card in all outgoing mail including anything that has a postage paid envelope!

24. Visit establishments you do business with (doctor's office, health food stores, karate/dance studios, etc) and ask if you can leave flyers or brochures

25. Car magnets

26. Use the old metal Band-Aid or gum tins & re-cover them, put a magnet on the back, then put your business cards in them. Attach this to your car when you go into a store

27. If your local store has an index card board, take advantage of it! Make sure to check the board each time you’re there because they rotate them frequently. Make sure you’re always posted by grabbing a few extra cards, fill them out in advance and carry them in your purse or tote. When you notice your ad has been removed, you have a pre filled card to replace it!

28. Get a booth at school events and share what you offer. Offer to donate a percentage of sales to the school

29. Check into an ad in school sponsored publications (directories, PTA booklets, etc). A great targeted audience and usually very affordable.

30. Set up a "free giveaway/free info" box in any store that will give you permission.

31. Post flyers at apartment complexes if they will allow it.

32. Under windshield wipers of cars of people who attend your Church (only with permission)

33. Sending a pamphlet with a business card with your child to hand out to everyone in his/her class to take home (get permission first)

34. Buy a pre-inked, personalized stamp and put your ad on it. Stamp the back of all your envelopes that you mail out. Do you know how many people look at an envelope before it gets opened by the mail department? A LOT!

35. If you have kids in school, join the PTA and offer your product as a fundraiser option

36. Annoyed with junk mail? Send them back your business card and flyer

37. Instead of a garage sale, host an inventory reduction sale. Get together with other local moms in business for a larger inventory. This is a great opportunity to pass out flyers and business cards, as well as talk to people about your business and opportunity

38. Gift basket raffles at Church bazaars, fish fries at your local community hall, any small town function (biz card in the basket) and biz cards on the table next to it

39. ALSO make gift baskets (if you sell a product that would work for this) for family, friends, neighbors, etc. for birthdays, anniversaries, Christmas, baby showers, bridal showers - you have to buy a gift anyway - make it a VERY SPECIAL one!

40. Visit your local gift shops and ask if they will sell your items on consignment. This can be a win-win situation. If you have a website, offer to mention them on your site

41. Business cards with a magnetic back really "stick" in people's minds as well as on their refrigerator!

42. Get repeat customers by always including a flyer with their order that has a discount offer on their next purchase

43. Put up flyers at the local large grocery stores

44. For a Spring Promo: Purchase inexpensive seed packets and put a cute tag on them with your pertinent information as well as a saying such as "I'm in the business of helping people grow"

45. Join LinkReferral.com

46. Leave a business card with your tip for your waiter/waitress

47. If you go to garage sales, ask if you can leave a few of your flyers there

48. Start a blog

49. Write a Press Release (check online for free press release submission)

50. Reciprocal links (link sharing)

And here’s one very important DO NOT EVER DO - I’ve seen a suggestion to reply to e-mail spam with your own advertisement. If you do this, you are letting the spammer know your e-mail address is valid and they will use it to send others more spam. This could get you banned from your ISP!

Please note that not all these ideas may be appropriate for your business. The important thing is to think creatively and experiment.
